Specification 38 Spandrel panel thermal performance

Specification 38 Spandrel panel thermal performance

This Specification describes methods of determining the thermal performance of spandrel panels.

To detail how to calculate the thermal performance of spandrel panels.

Spandrel panels are deemed to have the thermal properties nominated in Table S38C2, where—

  1. Configuration 1 consists of—
    1. a thermally unbroken (bridged) frame; and
    2. a centre of spandrel panel consisting of—
      1. a single-glazed opaque or clear face; and
      2. a 100 mm air gap; and
      3. a 3 mm aluminium, 0.8 mm galvanised steel or zinc back pan; and
  2. Configuration 2 consists of—
    1. a thermally unbroken (bridged) frame; and
    2. a centre of spandrel panel consisting of—
      1. a double-glazed opaque face; and
      2. a 50 mm air gap; and
      3. a 3 mm aluminium, 0.8 mm galvanised steel or zinc back pan; and
  3. Configuration 3 consists of—
    1. a thermally broken (unbridged) frame; and
    2. a centre of spandrel panel consisting of—
      1. a double-glazed clear face; and
      2. a 50 mm air gap; and
      3. a 3 mm aluminium, 0.8 mm galvanised steel or zinc back pan; and
  4. Configuration 4 consists of—
    1. a thermally broken (unbridged) frame; and
    2. a centre of spandrel panel consisting of—
      1. a double-glazed low-e clear face; and
      2. a 50 mm air gap; and
      3. a 3 mm aluminium, 0.8 mm galvanised steel or zinc back pan.

To detail the R-Value considered to be achieved by common forms of spandrel panels.

S38C2 provides the R-Value of 4 different spandrel panel configurations, representing common forms of spandrel panel. Each configuration can be tailored with additional insulation as specified in Table S38C2.
