C3.11 Bounding construction: Class 2 and 3 buildings and Class 4 parts

(a)

A doorway in a Class 2 or 3 building must be protected if it provides access from a Open link in same pagesole-occupancy unit to—

(i)

a Open link in same pagepublic corridor, public lobby, or the like; or

(ii)

a room not within a Open link in same pagesole-occupancy unit; or

(b)

A doorway in a Class 2 or 3 building must be protected if it provides access from a room not within a Open link in same pagesole-occupancy unit to—

(i)

a Open link in same pagepublic corridor, public lobby, or the like; or

(c)

A doorway in a Class 4 part of a building must be protected if it provides access to any other internal part of the building.

(d)

Protection for a doorway must be at least—

(i)

in a building of Type A construction — a Open link in same pageself-closing –/60/30 fire door; and

(ii)

in a building of Type B or C construction — a Open link in same pageself-closing, tight fitting, solid core door, not less than 35 mm thick,

except—

(iii)

in a Class 3 building used as a Open link in same pageresidential aged care building protected with a sprinkler system complying with Specification E1.5

(A)

a tight fitting, solid core door not less than 35 mm thick if the building is divided into Open link in same pagefloor areas not exceeding 500 m2 with smoke proof walls complying with Clause 2 of Specification C2.5; or

(B)

a tight fitting, solid core door not less than 35 mm thick fitted with a Open link in same pageself-closing device, a delayed closing device or an Open link in same pageautomatic closing device.

(e)

Other openings in Open link in same pageinternal walls which are Open link in same pagerequired to have an FRL with respect to Open link in same pageintegrity and Open link in same pageinsulation must not reduce the Open link in same pagefire-resisting performance of the wall.

(f)

A door Open link in same pagerequired by Open link in same page(d) may be Open link in same pageautomatic-closing in accordance with the following:

(i)

The Open link in same pageautomatic-closing operation must be initiated by the activation of a smoke detector, or any other detector deemed suitable in accordance with AS 1670.1 if smoke detectors are unsuitable in the atmosphere, installed in accordance with the relevant provisions of AS 1670.1 and located not more than 1.5 m horizontal distance from the approach side of the doorway.

(ii)

Where any other Open link in same pagerequired suitable fire alarm system, including a sprinkler system complying with Specification E1.5, is installed in the building, activation of the system must also initiate the Open link in same pageautomatic-closing operation.

(g)

In a Class 2 or 3 building where a path of travel to an Open link in same pageexit does not provide a person seeking egress with a choice of travel in different directions to alternative Open link in same pageexits and is along an open balcony, landing or the like and passes an Open link in same pageexternal wall of—

(ii)

a room not within a Open link in same pagesole-occupancy unit,

then that Open link in same pageexternal wall must—

(iii)

be constructed of concrete or masonry, or be lined internally with a Open link in same pagefire-protective covering; and

(iv)

have any doorway fitted with a Open link in same pageself-closing, tight-fitting solid core door not less than 35 mm thick; and

(v)

have any Open link in same pagewindows or other openings—

(A)

protected internally in accordance with Open link in same pageC3.4; or

(B)

located at least 1.5 m above the floor of the balcony, landing or the like.
